President Donald J. Trump wished all Muslims “a joyful Ramadan” upon the start of the Muslim holy month.

“During this month of fasting from dawn to dusk, many Muslims in America and around the world will find meaning and inspiration in acts of charity and meditation that strengthen our communities,” President Trump said in a May 26 statement.

“At its core, the spirit of Ramadan strengthens awareness of our shared obligation to reject violence, to pursue peace, and to give to those in need who are suffering from poverty or conflict,” the President said.

The President this month started his first international trip in Saudi Arabia, a Muslim country. He completes his eight-day trip to the Middle East and Europe and departs for his return to the United States on May 27.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and his wife, Renda St. Clair, likewise offered “a peaceful and blessed Ramadan” to Muslims around the world.

“Ramadan is a month of reverence, generosity, and self-reflection,” the secretary said in a statement. “Most importantly, it is a cherished time for family and friends to gather and give charity to those who are less fortunate. This time reminds us all of the common values of harmony and empathy we hold dear.”
