PRESS RELEASE
Improvements to Former U.S. Embassy Site in Penha, Bissau
The U.S. Embassy in Dakar will begin work on July 31 to remove three remaining structures located on the compound of the former U.S. Embassy in the Penha neighborhood of Bissau. The objective is to prevent further deterioration of the buildings to avoid them becoming a hazard. The project will also improve the image of the compound.
A local contractor, Mr. Ousseynou Gueye the owner of S.T.E construction Company , should complete the work within a period of 35 days. The contractor will make every effort to minimize necessary noise and dust. The project will comply with relevant local regulations and the U.S. Embassy in Dakar will coordinate, as appropriate, with local authorities. U.S. Government contracting regulations require a strict protocol for safety and worker welfare during the course of the project. To reduce waste, materials from the building will undergo recycling, while the contractor will properly dispose of any remaining trash at authorized dumping facilities.
The demolition of these facilities is a sign that the United States values the relationship with Guinea-Bissau and undertakes these activities as part of being a responsible member of the community. Over recent years, the U.S. has strengthened its presence in Guinea-Bissau through expanded programs and frequent visits, including at the Ambassadorial level, most recently by Chargé d’Affaires Martina Boustani to celebrate U.S. Independence Day.
Since 2013, the amount of time that U.S. officials have spent working in Guinea-Bissau has increased by more than ten-fold, demonstrating our commitment to a strong presence and to our engagement and assistance programs in Guinea-Bissau. Recent upgrades to our Bissau Liaison Office allow us to continue our partnership with the people of Guinea-Bissau as they strive to build a peaceful, prosperous and democratic future.
